what’s the catch?
no catch, but two things to know. the fund is run by one person with a schedule and responsibilities outside it, so we can’t help everyone, and the form exists so we can tell upfront whether something is feasible. and we won’t be assisting with the sale or the release itself. the plumbing is ours but the launch is yours.
what does it cost me?
nothing. the fund covers the inscription cost, which is the only hard cost, and the time is donated.
do you take a cut of sales?
no. not of the ordinal, not of any token, not now, not later. you owe the fund nothing, ever, and it has no claim on anything you make from the work.
do i keep my copyright?
yes, always. inscription makes a preservation copy. it moves no ownership of anything and you keep every right you had before.
can i still sell the work?
yes, and that’s the point of choosing a path upfront. either you keep the inscription and sell it as an ordinal, or you sell your work as a token on another chain and the fund holds the inscribed sat in the archive so there is only ever one thing to own.
what if i want the sat back?
ask, and it goes to an address you control. no notice period, no reason required, and the transfer is logged publicly so the record stays complete.
what files can i send?
most things with a file type. images, text, audio, video, generative work. send them as they are, because getting a file ready for bitcoin is part of what the storage fund does. there’s more detail on preparing your work.
is my work too big?
probably not, and it isn’t yours to solve. cost scales with size, and cost is ours to carry. bitcoin does put a real ceiling on a single inscription, so for a very large work we agree together what the preservation copy is, and the final call is yours. the registry records exactly what was inscribed, never implying a full-resolution master is onchain when a reduced version is.
what if my work includes someone else’s material?
tell us before anything is inscribed. samples, stock assets, fonts, collaborators, found material. none of it is automatically disqualifying, but inscription is permanent and we won’t put something on bitcoin that isn’t fully yours to give. we work it out first or we don’t do it.
how long does it take?
the conversation takes as long as it takes, and the inscription itself waits for a cheap fee window. we don’t inscribe into an expensive mempool because patience is what makes a small fund go far. usually that’s days, not weeks.
can i submit more than one work?
yes, though start with one. if it goes well the rest is easy, and if you’re planning a body of work there are onchain structures worth discussing before the first one is inscribed rather than after.
what happens if you disappear?
the work is fine. that’s the entire reason for doing this on bitcoin instead of a server. inscribed bytes don’t depend on the fund, this site, or anything staying online. the archive has its own contingency, written down and public.
is this a charity? is supporting it tax deductible?
no to both. the storage fund is a personal project, not a company or a registered organization of any kind. anything given to it is a personal gift and is not tax deductible.
